When is the official start?

Temperature, length of day, clocks changing, the return of migrating birds, there are many ways of defining the start of spring. For me it starts when it's warm enough to get plants out of their winter storage areas and into the garden again.  The top comes off the cold frame, more cold sensitive plants get put out in the day to start preparing them for full sun, and the pot holders get filled again.
Given that winter pretty much puts my gardening on hold, spring holds a special place as once again I can do more than just looking at plants in the shed.  For once my OH agrees, although for her it is because she gets her windowsills back and no longer has to worry about getting spiked as she walks around the house.

So what signifies the start of spring for you?

  1. Foe me the start of spring is when I read about other gardeners planting, moving out their tender and xeric plants and just plain enjoying spring...while I look out at the rain and wonder when it will stop.

    1. Hope the rain stops soon. We could do with some in the UK, official drought regulations start on the 4th of April so we wont be able to water the garden. Thankfully that wont affect me.

  2. Pussy willows are the first sign here in Central AB, and the return of the Canada geese flying in V's northwards again. Hearing them yelling overhead is occasion for bliss here. Then wild crocus and violets...and then all goes crazy. We're about a month or so shy of the latter, but we're hanging in! Thanks for sharing your pictures!

    1. The last two years we have had very early springs and then terrible wet summers. Lets hope it is different this year.
