This is not a group or plant I know much if anything about. I really liked the structure and bought it on a whim in the spring. If anyone knows exactly which astroloba it is, please leave the name in the comments.
It has been working up to a flower for most of the summer. I like
these little plants which have massive long flower stalks, although it
makes photographing them difficult.
The flowers though not the strongest colour are quite pretty
when looked at in more detail. I'm not sure if they will go on to open
more, like haworthia flowers.
The summer of flowers continues.
here's a site and it is in the Haworthia family

I have a version of what u have.. it grows fast and takes little water.. I have to cut it back pretty often.. loves hot weather.. U will love it!.. very low maintenance.
Thanks for the link. Makes sense, when you look at similarities in the flower.
Deletebtw the flowers don't open very much.. its unusual.. i am just glad its not yellow- i've got quite a few that give off a yellow flower
DeleteI was pleased with the flower colour as well.
DeleteThis is a plant I always called Poellnitzia rubiflora, although it's been included with the Astrolobas, Haworthias and even the Aloes, depending on whose taxonomy you are reading. It differs from all other Astrolobas, which have white flowers, by the red flowers. These similar groups also frequently hybridize which results in a lot of middle of the road plants. It comes from the Robertson Karoo area It should present no major cultivation problems, but it usually experiences a rather dry summer so be careful not to water too heavily during the heat of summer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the information. Thankfully watering tends not to be the problem for me, I'll just have to make sure it always stays in at least the greenhouse and is not put outside.
